Toys R Us was founded in the US in 1957 before launching in the UK in the 1980s. The brand was much-loved by Britons across the country, but the fall of the high street and the rise of online shopping in recent years have seen many shops struggle to keep afloat.
“Since its split from the US, we’ve watched the way in which the company has grown and focused on the Canadian customer.
“Much has been achieved and we’re excited to help to drive the business forward.”
Mr Putman added that the brand will “continue to assess any opportunities that make business sense”, causing further speculation that it might relaunch in the UK.
Toys R Us’ expansion has already begun as the brand has announced its products are available to buy online through the American retail giant Macy’s.
Both Britons and Americans were quick to take to social media to express their opinion about the news.
Many seemed happy and excited at the prospect of Toys R Us’ return.
One person said: “Doug Putman please bring Toys R Us back to the UK.”
In response to a tweet that asked, “What do you want back?”, another person wrote: “The kid in me says Toys R Us UK!”
One person commented: “This is great news!!!”
Another fan simply wrote: “Awesome.”
