The US Open women’s singles tournament is down to the final four, and just one of the semifinalists has won a Grand Slam in her career. That would be the No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, who is the two-time defending Australian Open champion, and was the runner-up at last year’s US Open. The 26-year old is in the midst of the best run of her career, but she may not be the cheering favorite in the two semifinals Thursday night.
That’s because of a pair of Americans — No. 13 seed Emma Navarro and No. 6 seeded Jessica Pegula — are both gunning for their first Grand Slam final. Navarro, who beat reigning champ Coco Gauff in the fourth round, is playing in the main draw at the US Open for just the third time, while the 30-year-old Pegula is enjoying the deepest Grand Slam singles run of her career, and upset the No. 1 player in the world Iga Swiatek to get to this semifinal.
The fourth semifinalist, Karolina Muchova, lost to Gauff in the semifinals at the US Open last year.
