The most decorated American male athlete in Olympic history will return to the Games as a broadcast contributor for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Michael Phelps will trade his speedo for a microphone in Paris, reprising his contributor role for NBC from the Tokyo Olympics.
Similar to how the network deployed Phelps three years ago, the 28-time Olympic medalist will be relied upon to provide analysis and perspective from his point-of-view in a studio format in the event a major story breaks, such as Simone Biles’ mental injury in Tokyo.
Other times, Phelps will be at the pool deck with iconic broadcasting duo Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines helping call the swimming action.
“We definitely flex according to where we think he is best positioned to contribute,” NBC Olympics president and executive producer Molly Solomon told USA TODAY Sports in June.
Hicks and Rowdy, who is also an Olympic medallist, will be calling swimming events at their eighth consecutive Olympic Games together, meaning they would have commentated Phelps’ 23 Olympic gold-medal performances across five different Games from 2004 to 2016.
