What does the future look like for Manchester United. Surely it’s time to stop dreaming of a title or comparing ourselves to other successful teams and accept our reality.
Rather than expecting a new manager to perform overnight miracles, we must accept that a lot of our players are either overrated and over payed, whilst some are still very young and raw with a lot to learn. Sprinkled throughout the squad are a few decent players of real quality but in reality, we must accept, there are several other teams in the league at this moment in time, that are just better, with better players.
Moving forward, I think we all want to see a better brand of football. That means being more organised and playing with more intensity. That means performing the basics properly, passing the ball better, making better decisions and performing as a collective team rather than a group of individuals. The individual mistakes must be eradicated, players must be more measured and patient, working together, rather than running up cul de sacs, or taking pot shots from ridiculous angles. I’ve always maintained that if you look after the performances, the results will take care of themselves.
We must work towards consistent, incremental improvements, we must start to consistently beat the teams around and below us and we must make Old Trafford a fortress again. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to win the majority of games at home, whilst also giving some of the top teams a tough game at Old Trafford. I firmly believe improving our home form will be absolutely crucial on the road to ultimately climbing the table and challenging the top clubs.
I don’t care much for top 4, I believe this has always been propaganda peddled by the Club for financial reasons and finishing within the top 4 should never be used as a barometer for success. Of course it helps in increasing revenue and helping to attract players, but there are infinite possibilities out there if you analyse the data and scout well. Man Utd will always have universal appeal and we’ll always be able to attract players.
Success will be achieved by focussing on the collective, performing the basics well, improving the intensity, working hard and staying humble.
I can already see a defined style of play, our ball retention and passing patterns have already improved.
In my opinion, Forest represents a bigger test than Arsenal. Can we turn up, play with effort and intensity and perform well against a decent Forest side that we should be beating, especially at home. However, if we show complacency and don’t demonstrate the required intensity or concentration then Forest are more than capable of winning the game.
Trust in the performance and the results will take care of themselves.
