Former Purdue All-American and Penn High School outside hitter Annie Drews will try to help the United States win a second consecutive Olympic gold medal.
Drews was slated to come off the bench in Tokyo, but a teammate’s injury propelled her into the starting lineup. She became Team USA’s top scorer for the tournament, including 15 points and 14 kills in the gold medal match.
“It’s our whole pursuit,” Drews said during the Tokyo run. “We’ve been committed to the four-year and, in this case, five-year process. All eyes on gold. That goal has influenced every decision we’ve made. Every point scored has been a deposit toward that goal.”
The 30-year-old has played professionally in Puerto Rico, Italy, Turkey and Japan.
