The biggest spectacle in sports is almost here with the 2024 Summer Olympics less than a month away from taking place in Paris, France over the course of 18 days later this month.
Events range from a wide number of categories: from archery to weightlifting and even sports climbing, which makes its second appearance ever in the Olympic Games.
Then there’s the popular, always must-see events in track and field, gymnastics, basketball and swimming to name a few.
With the opening ceremony inching closer and closer, here’s what you need to know about the start date and closing ceremony, New Jersey athletes participating in the Olympic games and more info for the 2024 Summer Olympics:
When are the opening, closing ceremonies for the 2024 Olympics?
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics will take place on Friday, July 26. Competition begins two days prior on Wednesday, July 24 with preliminary rounds in four events: archery, handball, football and rugby sevens.
This year’s will be must watch and has been deemed historic with it taking place outdoors on the Seine River, with 10,000+ athletes being serenaded in designed boats for their respective countries.
Following nearly three weeks of nonstop action, the closing ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. on Aug. 11 from the Stade de France, just north of Paris with a capacity of 80,698, the largest stadium capacity in France.
Are there new events coming to the 2024 Olympics?
The answer is yes! Breaking, aka break dancing, is making its Olympic debut in Paris. There will also be new events added across multiple sports, including in athletics, boxing, canoe slalom, shooting, sailing and sport climbing.
How many total events will there be in the 2024 Summer Olympics?
This year, there will be 44 different events with a total of 329 medals, which is slightly down from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), which had 339 medals.
