An Article titled : With Heart and Head and Eyes and Feels
My heart says “get rid, Philippe Clement (PC) is not moving us forward”. It’s a kick in the nuts every time Glasgow Rangers turn in a performance like the last two.
My head says “behave yourself, this transition period was always going to be hard. There will be bumps along the way”.
My eyes tell me “look at many of the performances this season (and last), the players aren’t buying into what PC is trying to do”.
But then my head says, “shut up you muppet, what about the Spurs, Ross County, Cup Final etc., they MUST be playing for him”.
My gut feeling is that something isn’t right within the squad. We can speculate till the cows come home, but no one truly knows what’s going on. SOMETHING is off though.
Let’s consider the players’ Hearts, Heads, Eyes and Feels though.
I watched an interview with Stuart McCall the other night and the way he spoke about the club, the team, the leaders in the dressing room. Goram, Gough, Brown, McCall, Ferguson, McCoist, Hately. Now point to 1 of our squad who gives a damn and is a leader, a TRUE leader in that squad.
I know we’re in a different era now with fewer British players at the club, but, you don’t need a British leader. The point stands, we have no natural born leaders. No one who would go in and turn that dressing room upside down after a poor performance. No one cares enough.
We have the 2nd most expensively assembled squad in the Scottish Premiership. Is anyone really going to argue our players are poorer than the rest of the league? Truth is, our players don’t fancy it. It’s a guts and heart thing. So we can rule out Heart!
In their heads, are they making sense of what PC is asking of them? It appears, few games excluded, no one seems to know their function. This also happened under Michael Beale. Apparently, he lost them.
In conclusion, there is something not right within the club as a whole, but with the squad especially.
Legacy players aren’t strong or good enough. New, younger signings have potential but by nature, will be inconsistent (and that’s ok if you already have a solid foundation in place – we don’t though), the Manager makes baffling decisions, ignoring what he sees in favour of sports science data. I don’t fully condemn him for that, but there has to be a balance.
My head tells me to give him to the end of the season, my eyes tell me we’re regressing and my heart tells me to prepare for a long, hard few years.
I feel like kicking the cat hut that i don’t have. I’d kick my dog, but he’d probably give me a doing, so I’ll just keep watching the ‘Gers and praying for a miracle. I FEEL it’s coming.
